Total loss: careful with popular imported cars!

Added 31 May 2021 by

AutoDNA reports are based on billions of records regarding vehicle history, repairs, damage, inspections and mileage. From this great fountain of knowledge we’ve pulled the 2020 total write-off statistics which will be of use to anyone looking for a used car.

Volkswagen Golf, Ford F-150, Honda CivicGolf: imported hits vs. total loss

Volkswagen Golf, Audi A4 and Audi A6 are among cars most frequently imported to Poland. It’s no surprise that it’s relatively easy to come across a written off car among them. This means that some of the cars suffered such extensive damage that they could no longer be repaired. Sometimes the cost of repairs far exceeded the value of the vehicle. Within this category, there are both cars that shouldn’t be rebuilt (e.g. those which burnt down in a fire) and those with the entire front replaced.

Modern cars are more complicated and for write-off, it often is enough to damage both LED headlights. Then the valuation of the damage may come close to the value of the car. A car can be written off because of this, just as if it burnt down in a fire.

Model vs. risk of total loss

In 2020, autoDNA users checked over 35 thousand VIN numbers related to Volkswagen Golf. In over 360 cases, they came across a written off vehicle. On the other hand, the users generated over 34 thousand reports regarding Ford F-150 in the last year.

Popular models attract the attention of buyers, which is reflected in the structure of import. Car market is still dominated by imported cars, which can be screened using autoDNA reports. All thanks to vehicle history, if you know the car’s VIN number. Regardless of whether the total write-off occurred in Germany, Poland or another country, information on this can be obtained from the autoDNA database. Of course, not all written-off cars should be disregarded immediately. If they were repaired in an authorized service centre using genuine parts, and the repairs have been documented, such a purchase may still be a reasonable option. It is also worth emphasizing that with the complexity of modern cars and the parts prices, an accident doesn’t have to be major to make a vehicle a total write-off. It sounds dangerous, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that the vehicle is an unrepairable wreck.
