Economical driving – how to save gas while driving?

21 November 2022

Saving gas while driving is something everybody should learn, because thanks to this you can save several or several dozen zloty monthly.

How to save gas while driving – how to do it?

There are many ways which to some extent allow reducing the fuel consumption, and as a result save up while driving. Below, we present a few of them.

Don’t weight up the car if there’s no need

Drivers often carry unnecessary stuff in their trunks – for example, after tire replacement, for the next few days they forget to put the old tires in the basement, or they carry reserve windscreen washer fluid in a 5-liter bottle. Or perhaps does it happen to you to forget a grocery item in your trunk, and you end up carrying a pack of soda bottles or a big pack of washing powder? It’s good to remember all the unnecessary item from the trunk, because the heavier the car – the higher the fuel consumption.

Information

The roof box is also an extra weight – so, if you don’t need it, uninstall it and store it somewhere instead of carrying it on top of your car.

Regularly check the tire pressure

At least once a month visit a station with a compressor to check if the tire pressure is correct. Driving with too much or too little tire pressure is not only dangerous, but also it negatively influences the fuel consumption while driving.

Try to drive smoothly

The fuel consumption is the least when the driving is smooth, steadily, without sudden movements, accelerating and slowing down. That’s why it’s worth being alert and trying to predict what can happen in a few or several meters. If you’re driving in a city, where the traffic lights are put every several meters, there’s no sense to accelerate a lot or overtake other drivers, because it might turn out that after a while you have to slow down and stop the car anyway. Sudden and dynamic acceleration and slowing down increase the fuel consumption.

Adjust the gears to the engine RPM

The car consumed the least fuel when the engine RPM is not so high. For Diesel engines it’s 2000 RPM, and for the gasoline ones – 2400 RPM. For higher revolutions, a higher gear is needed, then the gas consumption is lower.

Regularly replace filters

If the air filter and the fuel filters are not replaced regularly, then it might turn out that they are clogged, which increases the fuel consumption.

Don’t use the air conditioning if there’s no need

The air conditioning might cause a massive increase of the gas consumption, therefore turn it on only when it’s necessary. During longer rides, when the air conditioning is on, it’s good to turn it off from time to time – not only will you save on fuel, but also you’ll extend the service life of the A/C system itself.

Drive slower on a highway

Calmer and slower driving on a highway, without sudden movements, overtaking and sudden acceleration might bring you enormous savings. Especially because we drive long distances on highways, so the difference in the fuel consumption, and hence – saving up – is noticeable.

Choose less busy routes

You can usually drive smoother or roads which are less busy – you don’t have to stop, because the driver in front of you is waiting to turn, you don’t have to overtake, because another driver is driving too slow. It might turn out that by choosing a longer, but less busy route, you might use less gas than if you choose a shorter but more crowded route.

Don’t heat up the car before driving

It’s a common mistake done during winter – we heat up the car before we hit the road. However, it’s a double mismanagement. First of all, the car during a stopover, working on low revolutions, uses the fuel unnecessarily. In addition, when the engine is cold, it consumes more gas than when it’s warmed up, because it warms up faster while driving than when it’s at a standstill. So what should you do? Preferably, start-up the car and drive right away.

How to save gas while driving?

it’s good to keep in mind these few points, regardless of what car you drive – whether it’s a gasoline, Diesel, LPG or a hybrid. You can never save too much, and economic driving and lower combustion is good not only for your wallet, but also for the environment. In order to save gas while driving you don’t have to do a lot – some of the tips provided during the eco driving courses are trivial and can be followed at any time. Other tips, concerning the driving technique, need to be practiced, but these are skills which can be acquired even by a beginner driver.
